Suicide Prevention Action Network Annual Conference 2014

SPAN did a tremendous job again this year with their annual conference. I can’t say enough about those folks who continue to fight to stop suicide around the state. Idaho has many very dedicated individuals who work tirelessly attempting to improve the quality of life for those suffering and reducing the likelihood of suicide in your town. This year, we were fortunate enough to listen to Dr. Thomas Joiner (world renown suicidologist) discuss his new book “The perversion of Virtue, Understanding Murder-Suicide.” This was the second time I have seen Dr. Joiner and I was able to “rub elbows” with him at the end of day two which was awesome. Mental Health First Aid Training in Driggs

It was a historical moment last week when we held the very first Mental Health First Aid training in Driggs (April, 2014).  20 concerned community members, hospital employees, ISU nursing students and others came together and learned how to effectively help someone experiencing a mental health emergency. There was great group discussions surrounding stigma and the nursing students brought a unique perspective to the training. They also did an exceptional job portraying a panic attack while their teacher used the skills to deescalate the situation. Below is a picture of the role play exercise.
